v Course pre-requisites and Requirements:
- All Linguistic courses prior to level 8
- All the writing courses
- The Research Methods course
- Only graduating students in their final semester are allowed in this course.
v Required textbooks for this section:
- Burton-Roberts, Noel. (1999). Analysing Sentences: An Introduction to English Syntax. London: Longman.
- Hussein Abdul-Raof. (1998). Subject, Theme and Agent in Modern Standard Arabic. Surry: Curzon.
v Course description:
- This is a three hour credit course.
- It teaches graduating students how to collect and analyse data.
- English and other languages structure following the recently developed Linguistic theory is involved.
- Arabic language is emphasized.
- Arabic various dialects are counted for.
- Another basic aim if this course is to answer the question of: "How to implement a research in Linguistics".
v Course objectives:
By the end of this course the students will be able to:
- Analyse sentence structure, constituents, functions, and categories.
- Realyse the syntactic components of the verb phrase and group, adverbials, the noun phrase and sentences within sentences.
- Apply Linguistic analysis on data from English and other languages.
- Implement a research in Linguistics.

v Attendance and class policies:
Students are expected to:
- be punctual and attend all classes. Being absent for more than 20% of allocated course time means that she will receive a DN (denied from final exam) grade which is equivalent to an F.
- work cooperatively with classmates and instructor
- listen and ask for clarification
v Course evaluation:
1. Quiz (1): 10% (WEEK 4)
2. Quiz (2) 10% (WEEK 6 )
3. Quiz (3) 10% (WEEK 8 )
4. Project &class work 20% (WEEK 9 )
5. Presentation 10% (WEEK 10 )
6. Final Exam 40%
v Attendance policy:
- Students are expected to be punctual and attend all classes
- If a student arrives after the scheduled beginning time for class, it will be put down in the attendance sheet as Late (3 times Late = 1 absence)
- Being absent for more than 20% of allocated course time means that the student will receive a DN (denied from final exam) grade which is equivalent to an F
v General Policies:
- There will be NO make-up exams
- Medical reports cannot be received in class. To present a medical report, come to the instructor’s office during office hours
- During classes and exams, mobile phones should be turned off or set to silent mode
- Students are expected to know and abide by university policies governing student conduct
- Students are expected to exhibit a high level of personal and academic integrity and honesty
